Nurburgring: the green hell

The infamous Nürburgring , located in the west of Germany, was nicknamed “the green hell” by F1 legend Sir Jacky Stewart with good reason. Believed to have claimed the lives of over 200 drivers, it is one of the most demanding race tracks in the world. While modern F1 drivers no longer have to negotiate the 13 mile north loop or Nordschleife, using instead the much shorter Grand Prix course, the general public can test their mettle on the intimidating track on the weekly open days, for a small fee.
The track is typically open every Sunday, you just turn up in your vehicle, buy as many lap tickets as you need and off you go. The tracks status is that of a one-way public toll road with (mostly) no speed limit. As such German road laws apply so your car must be road legal and you’ll need to make sure your insurance covers you. If your car is rather lacking in performance there are several companies offering hire cars set up for the track in the local area.
